_Radio Garden

Inspired by the idea that radio signals transcend borders, the interactive web platform Radio Garden allows the user to listen to any radio station around the world. The project’s interface is comprised of a Google Earth style globe that is dotted with numerous bright green points — each symbolizing a radio station. By simply spinning this virtual Earth, the user can tune in to a station in Istanbul, London or Mexico City.

In addition to the “Live” option, Radio Garden has three other sections: History, Stories and Jingles. In “History,” one can find various historical uses of radio such as a news program from the World War II era or an Arabic language lesson. In “Stories,” people describe their experiences as radio listeners and how this medium allowed them to feel at home, and at the same time, connect with the rest of the world. “Jingles” section presents international examples of short-form music and sound design that are used for branding radio stations and programs.

The playful format of Radio Garden allows for serendipitous encounters with local music, languages and radio histories. At the same time, it is a testament to our globalized world where popular culture is shared beyond national and geographic borders.
