Modern life is a hubbub, increasingly noisy everywhere from the city centers to once pristine natural settings. While many of us turn to our devices and other distractions to escape from silence, researchers are realizing that an overwhelming abundance of sound in our environments can generate harmful effects. Sound Ecology explores the world through the lens of acoustic ecologists, who turn their attention to the soundscapes that  most of us let fade into the background of our day-to-day experience.

Visitors to Sound Ecology can explore four different types of environments—city, suburb, nature, and hermitage. Within each zone, images and animation anchor the navigation through these distinctive soundscapes. By altering the sounds in the space, users can explore the effect of environmental change on the sonic ecosystem. Sound Ecology aims to give users a new lens to think about their own personal environments, exploring a completely new world of sounds and silence.
