“In 2001, Chernobyl took me from black and white to colour and from motion to boundaries. Basically, I was going from reporting to documentary forcing me to think about my approach of photojournalism.”
Guillaume Herbaut, Co-Director, on his website
“Chernobyl” has become synonymous with environmental disaster ever since a 1986 nuclear meltdown near Chernobyl, Ukraine made headlines around the world. While the town’s landscape still bears scars from the meltdown, the area is far from lifeless. In the 27 years since the tragedy, economies have been built around the disaster site: illicit tourism, decontamination centers, and scrap metal operations that harvest abandoned military equipment.
Over the course of several years, Le Monde journalists Bruno Masi and Guillaume Herbaut recorded stories focusing on Chernobyl’s rebirth. Their award-winning web documentary The Zone features eight sections focusing on subjects as diverse as people making a fresh start inside the no-go “exclusion zone” to disaster tourism. Each section has a mosaic of short videos and photo slideshows.
