“The W.H.Y. Project empowers a generation through photography and storytelling to create change in their communities as well as in their own lives. You have a voice, we want to see it.”
Cause Beautiful, Author, In W.H.Y. website.
W.H.Y. We Hear You Project engaged urban youth in a media-making process as a way of raising their voices and points of views on the social issues that affect their communities. The project was developed in San Francisco, Tampa, and Oakland, where the Cause Beautiful team connected young students with local media organizations and professionals who mentored them and followed their creative processes.
For two weeks, the students learned about mobile-based digital photography, storytelling and editing techniques. As a result, they created narratives that went from the story of a barbershop in Tampa, the dream of a 14-year-old boy to be on Broadway, the value of Family for a girl in Oakland, and the meaning of acceptance for a group of students in San Francisco. The result of the projects is available on their website.
